For 4 generations our family has been hunting and guiding in Colorado.
Grant’s maternal Grandfather homesteaded in Colorado in 1888 to run cattle and sell beef to the gold miners during the Cripple Creek Gold Rush. Later, in the early 1900’s, he helped guide and outfit President Teddy Roosevelt on the President's Colorado hunts.
Around 1920, Grant’s father's family homesteaded just West of Canon City, on land around what is now the Royal Gorge, and began hunting Mule Deer on the ranch and guiding guests in annual hunting camps.
Grant took his first deer on the ranch, a 32” wide buck, when he was 9 years old in 1959. By 1963 his family figured he might as well start guiding, and thus began over 50 years of helping hunters fulfill their dreams! During this time he has personally taken over 100 Mule Deer bucks, many Elk (including a 383" bull), the"Big 8"of Colorado with a Longbow, which includes Pronghorn, Black Bear, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goat, Mountain Lion, and Whitetail Deer. This accomplishment was part of what earned him a place in the Colorado Bowhunters Hall of Fame, and Colorado Bowhunter of the Year honors. He has also taken the Grand Slam of North American Wild Sheep.
Grant's hunting career has taken him to Africa, Russia, New Zealand, Argentina, Mexico, several Canadian provinces and many states. He has a number of animals in the Boone & Crockett, Pope and Young, and Safari Club record books. He has taken over 40 species of big game, has had cover photos and articles in a number of hunting magazines, including Peterson's Hunting, American Hunter, Bowhunter, Grand Slam, Wild Sheep, etc. He is a life member of NRA, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Wild Sheep Foundation, Colorado Bowhunters, Safari Club, Christian Bowhunters and North American Hunting Club. He is a senior member of the Pope and Young Club, the Boone and Crockett Club, etc. and is an official measurer for B&C, P&Y, and Safari Club.
He has guided many well known hunters including General Norman Schwartzkoff, George, Norma and Bubba Strait, the famous sheep hunter Sherwin Scott, several sports figures like Bo Jackson and Walter Peyton, as well as the owners of the San Antonio Spurs, and others.
Grant also has enjoyed many years of guiding hunters connected with Focus on the Family, devotions, Bible Studies and Sunday messages. Grant has edited, written and photographed for both "The Way for Cowboys" New Testament and "The Heart of the Outdoors" sportsman's Bible.
Grant has appeared on many radio and television programs and concert stages with personalities such as Waddie Mitchell, Baxter Black, Don Edwards, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the Sons of the San Joaquin, Kathy Mattea, Willy Nelson, etc. and has had the opportunity to share his relationship with Christ and the "Way for Cowboys" with them. He has also done two TV specials with the late Dale Evans, preached many years of Cowboy Church at Michael Martin Murphy's Westfest, and has been the featured speaker, Master of Cermonies, etc. at a number of Pope & Young, Boone & Crockett, Rocky Mtn Elk, and other conventions.
Adkisson Outdoors also has several professional cooks and on some hunts, a gourmet chef, as well as a great team of guides on each ranch.
Grant has guided on many shows on the Outdoor and Sportsman's Channels including Trophy Hunter TV, Eastman's Journal, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundations Team Elk, etc.
He has guided flyfishers and fished rivers, streams and still water in Alaska, New Mexico, Arkansas, Missouri , Montana, Colorado as well as New Zealand. He is currently guiding fishermen on Vermejo Park, in addition to some other wonderful ranch waters.
Yet even after experiencing all the blessing of the these many adventures, some of Grant's greatest joy in the outdoor world is building memories and fulfilling dreams of men and women by guiding them to incredible animals and fish in the midst of God's beautiful Creation!
